Attempt at constructive criticism over trakt2.0
Ok, my initial reaction to the new website is VERY negative, but instead of whining about it, I'm going to try and point out specific issues so that they can be addressed:
In no particular order:
1. The design looks like it is for tablets/phones. I don't use the website on my phone or tablet. I use it daily on my computer. Most of the screens have a VAST amount of wasted white space on both the left and right. Almost a third of the screen is wasted.
The calendar view was and is the only real reason I use the website. I use it to see if I missed any of my shows in the past week or to look at premeirs. I had "hide watched shows" and "hide collected shows" on at all times so that I can only see things that I haven't DVR'd or watched yet. Currently, there are no options for "Premeirs" or to hide shows. That makes the view very cluttered and not very useful.
The new site doesn't work with XMBC. Nothing I've watched today has scrobbled or been added to my collection.
The calendar page is layed out REALLY poorly. Let me show you a screenshot to explain why:http://steelcityscores.no-ip.biz/images/AnnotatedScreenshot.png
The vertical layout of the calendar makes it very difficult to use. Previously, an entire day of shows would fit on the screen at once. Now, any day that has more than 2 shows has to be scrolled. Some days for me (like Sundays), it's not unusual for me to have 10+ shows that day. That is 5 pages of scrolling just to see whats on that day. To compare them, I have to scroll back and forth constantly. Previously, I could just scroll down to "Sunday" and they'd all be on screen.
The covers take up entirely too much screen space. Ideally, for me, I'd prefer no images at all on the calendar. If hiding images entirely isnt an option, then shrinking them to 1/3 the size (and squeezing more on screen) would be nice. Also, if there has to be images, episode screen caps would be preferable over the series cover.
In relation to the previous point, I think the "Later This Week" section in the dashboard is near perfect: Title in H2, full episode name in H3, airtime in regular font, no images cluttering it up. Only thing it would need to be a perfect calendar is to have the date in addition to the air time, to be layed out so that an entire day fits on the screen at once, and navigation buttons.
This box to put in a forum note is entirely too small for people trying to give details. It's only ~75 characters wide and 5 lines tall. It does have scroll bars, but that makes it really hard to proof-read before we submit. It would be nice if it grew dynamically (or was at least as wide as the column the notes displayed in and at least 10 rows tall)
The settings page is a bit... spartan. I assume there will be things there eventually :) It would be nice to have settings to shrink images, customize the dashboard, get stats for things that interest me.
The "movies" portion of the calendar seems pretty... useless? Even when I went to All Movies, it was empty. I find it hard to believe that no network is showing a movie this week at all. Might be something to look into.
Several of these have been addressed over the past weeks, namely the calendar updates. More calendar updates are still coming. The other ideas are covered in other topics and will be addressed.
@mari-mary there has been feedback. Admins said in various threads (particularly the "everything is shit" one) that they are not answering because they are working full time on the site, but that they read everything.
Also, they update the twitter account every time they make a change.
I would add another thing that needs to be improved: the list page. I still can't edit my personal lists and when I see a show it doesn't take it out of watchlist (I have to do it manually).
Also, I tried to take out of the watchlist a movie and I got a message saying that I can't take movies out of the watchilist. Since I use that list to track things I want to see so I don't forget, having things I saw there makes it useless.
So far, I'm very pleased with the changes done after the big change.
Maybe people wouldn't be so pissed and angry if there was actual feedback from the admins and/or updates on the things they're working on.
Scrobbling with XBMC worked for a while but has been down again for the past two hours. Syncing never worked. It's been three days now and I'm tired of checking for updates that never come and still I have to do everything manually on trakt and on SeriesGuide.
Maybe people would give constructive feedback if we actually got the feeling that someone was reading it and answering it. Or at least giving a timetable of when we can expect all core functions to work again. But this is ridiculous.
I actually really like the new design, but I don't care for it at all as long as the reason why I use trakt (syncing between XBMC and Series Guide and tracking what I watch automatically) is simply not working anymore.
Ok, I like the updates since I posted this thread. Some updates:
1. No real changes
2. The calendar has navigation buttons to change weeks. Kudos! This makes it usaeful again! :) Based on the new changes, I have some more suggestions on it and I will add them at the end of the list.
3. Still not seeing anything working with my XBMC plugin. I'll do some testing tonight. That is probably something I'll have to take up with the developer of the plugin.
4. Many improvements here. Particularly nice is including the series title.
5. THANK YOU! Moving back to the horizontal layout is a VAST improvement. Switching to screen caps instead of series covers is nice as well. They are still too big for my taste. Even on my 1920px wide monitor, I still only get 3 episodes per row.
6. No change here. They are still too large. Only get 3 episodes per row on a 1920px wide screen.
7. The title was added. Date is correct. The font color/choice is often difficult to read if the episode image is white.
8. Still a tiny imput box :)
9. I see some new settings (Well, setting, but it is a really important setting :) )
10. Movies is working now
So, while I'm sure you've been hearing enough whining, I just wanted to let you know at least one of us appreciates that you're working on it and wants to give you some accolades.
As far as suggestions: If you put a simple 1 or 2 pixel grey shadow around the white text that is overlayed on the covers and/or screen caps, that will make it readable no matter what the background is. Currently, if the cover or screen cap is mostly white, the Text is sometimes impossible to read.
@derek I doubt it will be that difficult, https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2391824/allowing-users-to-choose-custom-theme-in-rails
@packandmac Thanks! I have no idea about the "behind the courtains" of a site. Now I'm seeing some features coming back. I don't mind some of the changes in how the site looks...others (like the color and the huge size of everything) should be at least customizable.

@packandmac you've said it yourself - if they switched the language (and most likely the database structure), then you can't simply switch the interfaces.
@gallifreysbowtie the old site wasn't slow because of how it looked, sounds like they switched from PHP to ruby on rails. If all the old features are coming back at some point I don't see why we can't have the option to choose the old interface.
On point 3, XMBC... There is still some functionality remaining with the XBMC (13.2) Trakt.tv plugin (2.3.1). When I am watching a show, my Trakt profile page displays a red banner, saying "YOU ARE WATCHING" and then the show title and episode number and name. (It takes about 45 seconds to show up.) After I have watched a whole show in XBMC, it is marked as watched and appears on my Trakt profile page under "LAST WATCHED" and "Recently watched episodes." I have not seen XBMC ask for a rating of an episode after the change to Trakt 2.0, but I don't really need that. In Trakt 2.0, nothing is being added to My Collection by XBMC, but I never really used that feature.
However, I do need custom lists to be reimplemented. (They are visible in 2.0, but you cannot edit them.) These are used by certain XBMC plugins and Flexget.
Yes, but the classic view wasn't working for me at all. The site was too slow. If you say I can have the old view with the new speed then I'm up for it.
This would solve a lot of problems http://i.imgbox.com/mtUXDeWW.png
Please give us the option to use the old view.
I so like this post better than the just ranting one. So I'll add something:
- Some buttons (for exapmple the one where I can chose how to order my lists) are showed as plain text instead of a link, so I can't really chose anything.
- I still can't rate anything or marked as seen so the site became pretty useless. To me this should be one of the first things to fix.
- Please do the color thing that Tiffany suggested here. Please do that.
The color....... the red is just completely out of hand. If you want red #ed1c24 is definitely NOT the shade of red to use. It burns... badly. Darken it to about #8f1b1f and it'll be a massive improvement. I did a pretty terrible job here so just focus on the big red bar and you'll see immediately how one burns your eyes and the other is fine: http://i.imgur.com/6QS6OM4.gif
I get that you're going to add some features back but I don't see anything about the color scheme and this absolutely has to change.
I wholeheartedly agree with all of these points... they seem like no-brainers to me.
Out of curiosity, I would be interested to know what the statistics say about mobile usage compared to desktop. Maybe that's why they decided that desktop was irrelevant?
On the positive side, they seem to have fixed the speed issues. Site is working blindingly fast now! :)
